These jumbos help diffuse man-animal conflicts

Recently, they were called to help rescue the pregnant wild elephant that died recently in KeralaKOZHIKODE: While captive elephants in Kerala, around 700, have been enjoying some rest and quiet over the past three months thanks to the lockdown, the kumki elephant squad from Muthanga in Wayanad district has been busy trying to defuse man-animal conflicts.

Kumki elephants have become the most sought-after deterrent to drive away rogue jumbos who stray into human habitats. The seven trained kumki elephants have been in action in various districts in Kerala. One in Pathanamthitta called Kunju, spent 12 days tracking a man-eater tiger. Three others are now stationed at Palakkad for daily counter operations against wild elephants.
