CLOSEEvery year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.Moose: A cuddly, loveable dog With one look at adorable Moose and into his soft eyes, you can automatically tell this 12-year-old German shepherd is a gentle giant. This big boy is in great shape however at almost 85 pounds this sweet senior can use some help trimming down to a better weight to keep him active and for his joints to stay as healthy as possible since he loves going on walks and to play. For Moose and about 10 other pups, rescue came at the hands of an Arizona Humane Society Cruelty Investigator in April after they were abandoned by their previous owner. An extremely unfortunate, avoidable decision that is unfortunately seen much too often and just one reason why AHS’ Pet Resource Center was started. This group of dedicated professionals helps give pet owners the resources they need in an effort to help keep pets out of the shelter and in their homes, however when that is not possible then they will work with the family on the best plan for all parties. With all this behind him, Moose is still as easygoing as ever and is looking for a family where he can be a loving companion for his golden years. And for those who love a lap full of cuddly pup, then this guy is the one for you as he is an expert at snuggling. How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s adoption locations remain closed as the shelter continues to heal and rehabilitate pets coming in but its Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families. Interested adopters can view available pets, like Moose, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.—Kelsey Dickerson, Arizona Humane SocietyBriona: A cat with lots of love Briona is comfortable living her life in a shelter, but how much better it would be if she would have the chance to experience real home life with loving owners who could give her lots of attention and most of all, lots of love.  This beautiful 6-year-old has been living at Sun Cities 4 Paws for over three years, after being rescued with her three kittens.  At first she was wary of people, but very gradually she has become trusting and now enjoys gentle petting and brushing. She would very likely do best in a quiet home, as she is used to a child-free environment. She gets along fine with other cats. How to adopt: If you are interested in paying Briona a visit, please call 623-773-2246 Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. for information. Steadman: A sweet cat Steadman is a male, 7-year-old, domestic long-haired tabby cat. He has what some might call “resting grouchy face” but behind that facade is a sweet guy with a large personality. Steadman is a smart boy and also displays a lot of confidence when interacting with his people. He does have a fun side and enjoys his daily play sessions. He would thrive best in a quiet, stable home. How to adopt: Steadman is currently living at Friends for Life’s adoption center located in Gilbert at 952 W. Melody Avenue. His adoption fee is $125 At Friends for Life Animal Rescue, all animals are altered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, and cats are tested for FELV/FIV. Since Friends for Life is following COVID-19 guidelines, an appointment would need to be made to meet Steadman. Please visit http://www.azfriends.org where you’ll see a pop up appear with instructions on how to make an appointment and fill out a consultation form prior to visiting Steadman. Chino: A bunny looking for a happy lifeSweet, adorable little Chino is as cute as they come, however for this tiny 9-month-old short hair rabbit it has not been an easy road – and he has the marks to prove it. Rescued in February by an Arizona Humane Society Cruelty Investigator, this petite bun was just one of many that were living in conditions that were not conducive to having a healthy or happy life.Found with open and infected wounds on his ears, face and neck, along with stomach problems and a mass, all of which were not being medically treated, Chino was taken to AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital. While there, he received medicine for his tummy, had his mass removed and wound care until he was healthy enough to go to a Foster Hero home for continued recovery and weight gain.A great companion that is as soft as he looks, this rabbit is a great house pet but definitely a reminder that, like all pets, bunnies need specialized care in an environment that is fit for their mental and physical well-being. Additionally, domesticated rabbits like Chino cannot survive out on their own like their wild cousins, especially in the heat of Arizona. However, with research and a realistic expectation of what you can provide compared to what a pet is in need of, there are many great pets like Chino who are looking just waiting for their perfect forever home. How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s adoption locations remain closed as the shelter continues to heal and rehabilitate pets coming in but its Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families.
