Disney+ Announces New Films And TV Shows For July (2020)

The instant appeal of Disney+’s launch catalogue of titles was never in doubt. Disney classics, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pixar and a little thing called Star Wars added up to a hell of a start. The question now, though, is how well Disney+ can build on its head start with new content.
In June Disney+ managed to keep its profile up by bringing Disney’s adaptation of Artemis Fowl to its platform in lieu of a proposed cinematic release scuppered by the Coronavirus pandemic. But does it have any rabbits to pull out of the hat for July?
The most surprising and, likely, popular addition will be a filmed stage performance of hit musical Hamilton (available on July 3). According to Disney, this Original Disney+ production will ‘combine the best elements of live theater, film and streaming to bring the cultural phenomenon to homes around the world”. This description sounds a bit like word soup, to be honest, but it will be interesting to see if the Hamilton ‘movie’ is truly more than a fairly traditional filmed performance piece.

Two other Disney+ originals that stand out on the July slate are Rogue Trip and Muppets Now. In Rogue Trip, ABC correspondent Bob Woodruff joins his son exploring countries and regions that don’t make the typical tourist bucket list, but actually have fascinating tales to tell and sights to see. All episodes of Rogue Trip arrive on July 24.
Muppets Now is described (rather cryptically) by Disney+ as “The Muppets Studio’s first unscripted series and first original series for Disney+”. Over six episodes, it will show Scooter trying to make delivery deadlines and upload the new Muppet series for streaming, despite the endless obstacles and complications that end up getting thrown at him by his Muppet buddies. Muppets Now kicks off with just its first episode on July 31.

When it comes to ‘library’ TV shows and films, there will be around 40 titles joining Disney+ throughout July. A full list of these – and other new Disney+ originals – appears below. But the highest profile additions are Solo: A Star Wars Story (July 10), Ice Age: Collision Course (July 3), The Mighty Ducks (July 3) and, if you’re an animal lover, a host of nature documentaries including Season 1 of Wild Congo and Wild Sri Lanka (July 24); India’s Wild Leopards; and the first seasons of both Jungle Animal Rescue and Alaska Animal Rescue (July 31).
The full list of new shows coming to Disney+ in July (in the US – titles may vary in other regions) is as follows:
