Suvivalist Bear Grylls is one of the bestl-known adventurists thanks to multiple TV shows, millions … [+] of books sold and more. Now, he partners with watch brand Luminox.
Luminox, Bear Grylls
Earlier this year, Luminox—the brand that makes true instruments for adventurers, explorers and the U. S. Navy SEALs—announced its partnership with the ultimate adventurer, Bear Grylls. Like everything Luminox does, and Bear Grylls for that matter, this was no ordinary brand ambassadorship. In addition to the relationship, the two worked together to create a series of new Luminox X Bear Grylls watches: Luminox Bear Grylls Survival collection. Recently, I had the chance to talk with Grylls about his adventures, his survival tactics, his watch collaboration and time.
Easily one of the most important messages that survivalist (and author of more than 85 best-selling books about survival) Bear Grylls wanted to convey in the collaboration was not only “Never Give Up,” but also the concept that time is a gift – one to be used wisely. For the man who was one of the youngest to ever climb Mt. Everest, who broke several vertebrate in his back during a failed parachute jump from a plane, and who constantly is aware of every passing second when in the wild, time plays a significant role.
“Time for a survivor in the wild is finite, even if you just look at the basics,” says Grylls. “I always talk about threes: three weeks without food, three days without water, three minutes without air, and also I add to that three seconds without thinking, because if you take one wrong turn, or are just a little switched off and not concentrating, you can step on that log and it gives way, or get bitten by a snake, or get pinned in those rapids , or tread on the ice and the crevasse goes. So, seconds can be a lifetime in the wild, and the great skill of survival is having good instincts about timing and understanding the value of time.”
In his partnership with Luminox, Bear Grylls worked with the brand on the new Bear Grylls Survival … [+] collection of watches.

Grylls says that time is also a great leveler, especially when you are trying to juggle work, adventure and all other aspects of life. “No matter who you are, we all share the same resources . How will you spend those hours, minutes, and days? Time is a great gift and our lives reflect how we choose to use that time.”
He reflects on the fact that sometimes the seconds move so quickly, and other times, they are in slow motion. “If people never believe that time can slow down, they haven’t experienced something terrifying. They haven’t been falling at 150 mph under a malfunctioning parachute. Those were the longest seconds of my life.”
The Luminox Bear Grylls Survial watch collection is comprised of watches in the Land, Sea and Master … [+] lines.
Following his long recuperation from that fall and a broken back, Grylls said he needed to fulfill his dream to climb Mt. Everest. It was almost as though he had to prove to himself that he could do it. In fact, he says, that climb may have been his biggest life challenge to date.
“Everest was a formative time in my life and it as such a symbolic time for me. We had three-and-a-half months on that mountain. We had four climbers lose their lives; two died of the cold and two fell. But I eventually reached the top and where [before this] there had been a sense that I couldn’t recover from that accident, I realized on that climb that it is not about being the biggest, the bravest, the strongest. It is just about being tenacious and never giving up. That is why NGU is such a key part of what I stand for. … What really matters in life is just quiet resilience. Success is always rooted in recovering from failure, and getting back up … has organically become such a key part of what we stand for.”
Every Luminox Bear Grylls Survival watch features his motto “Never Give Up” on it.
According to Grylls, he has worn Luminox watches for years, not just on many of his survival expeditions, but also when he was in the military—with the British SAS. So, for him, teaming with the brand was a natural fit.
For the Bear Grylls Survival Collection, Luminox (the watch of choice for not only the SEALS, but also The Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR)) combines its self-powered Luminox Light Technology with other functions that Bear Grylls and his team deem helpful in survival situations. Those include rugged materials, a compass, walking speed scale, and more. There are Bear Grylls Survival Land, Master and Sea versions, each with the Bear Grylls saying “Never Give Up” emblazoned somewhere on the watch.
The Bear Grylls Survival watches are made in either Carbonox(TM) or stainless steel.
“It is a watch that a lot of us used in the military because it is robust and has a good light on it, and other features,” says Grylls, who admits that he had other watch sponsors on some of his expeditions. “But really in my heart, whenever I didn’t have a sponsor, I would always come back to Luminox, because they were just good, tough functional watches. They worked, and ultimately for me that was the appeal. I have enough other stuff to worry about when I am half-way up a mountain or in a jungle; the last thing I want breaking is my watch.”
He says when Luminox approached him about the partnership, he was stoked. He and his team worked with the brand on a host of prototypes and added functions they wanted in a watch, such as more light technology, being able to find north, and other simple survival features. They also accentuated the watches with the black and orange colors that are distinctive for Bear Grylls. “And, of course, I knew I wanted our slogan of ‘Never give up’ on all of them.
In a private interview with Bear Grylls about his Luminox Survival watches, he says that every … [+] second counts when trying to survive in the wild.
So, what is Bear Grylls’ advice to today’s adventure seekers? “I would say go for it. … Don’t listen to the dream stealers who are in our lives; follow your own dream and go for it. Then it’s about the journey. The key skills that have helped me on the journey are courage in a big moment, and courage is quiet but always moving forward, and determination, and kindness. There is no point in reaching the top of our mountain and being the only person there and being lonely, or not a very nice person.”
The Bear Grylls Survival collection is created expressly for those who love adventure, and you can find all of the details about the watches and the collaboration on ATimelyPerspective.
