What’s Coming to HBO Max in July 2020

Image: Warnes Bros. PicturesFormatting this gigantic list of what’s coming to and leaving HBO Max, HBO Go and regular old on-your-TV HBO this month gave me the occasion to note a strange synchronicity between the new arrivals and planned departures on the streaming service. For example: 15 films based on D.C. comics, including many of their big, recent blockbusters like Justice League and Wonder Woman, are going away, but HBO is placating superhero fans by adding a dozen of so animated D.C. films to the lineup.Director George Miller’s weird, disturbing, and Oscar-winning animated film Happy Feet is dancing off the service at the end of the month. No worries: You can continue your Miller marathon with Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, which will traumatize your children almost as much. Exit Guillermo del Toro’s bloody horror flick Crimson Peak, enter Guillermo del Toro’s bloody horror flick Blade II. So long, The Neverending Story, a film I watched obsessively in the ‘80s.
