Disney+ Announces New Films And TV Shows For June (2020)

It’s fair to say Disney+ has got off to a pretty good start. The unparalleled pulling power of its Star Wars, Marvel, Disney and Pixar library has seen it rack up huge subscriber numbers since it launched last November. It’s also provided plenty of treats to keep fans of more vintage cinema happy, too, with often impressive remasters of archive classics (some of which I talk about in this earlier article).
While you certainly couldn’t complain about the amount of content Disney+ had available from launch, though, the next challenge for the service is to keep adding new stuff to keep streamers coming back for more once they’ve finally exhausted the launch catalogue. Cue this look at what’s being added to the platform in June 2020.
The full list of Disney+ June additions appears at the end of this article, but let’s pick out a few of the highlights first.
The highest profile addition to Disney+ in June has to be Artemis Fowl. This Kenneth Branagh-directed adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s popular novel about a 12-year-old genius trying to save his kidnapped father from within a fantastical world was originally intended to get a theatrical release.  However, that, as with so many other things, was scuppered by the arrival of COVID-19. So now the film is going straight onto Disney+ on June 12th.

With its planned cinema run scuppered by the Coronavirus, Artemis Fowl debuts on Disney+ on … [+] June 12.

Fans of Colfer’s books didn’t take well to the first trailer of the film when it appeared back in March, fearing that it looked like it had ‘Hollywoodized’ the lead character. Branagh usually knows how to put a decent film together, so let’s hope it manages to silence its pre-release critics. But at the same time, you can’t help but think that if Disney was confident it had a hit on its hands, it might have been less eager to sacrifice what could have been a very lucrative cinema run.
If you want more in a (somewhat) similar vein to Artemis Fowl, the film adaptation of Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief arrives on June 26. Though in truth, all but the most die-hard Percy Jackson fans will probably find it hard to unearth much excitement from what manages to be a pretty humdrum effort.

The other new film highlight for June is Disney’s Tarzan from 1999 (arriving June 26). For other stand out stuff we need to turn to Disney ‘making of’ shows.
I’m a bit cynical, honestly, about Disney+ relying so heavily on such documentaries for so much of its new content. That said, fans of Frozen might well be interested in the six-episode series about the making of Frozen 2 that arrives on June 26. And Mandalorian fans desperate for a Star Wars-related fix can catch the final three episodes of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian from June 5, June 12 and June 19 respectively.

If you want to find out how The Mandalorian gets made, the last three parts of Disney’s ‘making of’ … [+] series come out in June.
