Winston and more pets up for adoption in Phoenix-area shelters this week

CLOSEAutoplayShow ThumbnailsShow CaptionsLast SlideNext SlideEvery year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.Winston: A spunky kitty Winston is a handsome and sweet 4-year-old domestic medium hair black and gray kitty who has quite the history with the Arizona Humane Society. Originally brought to AHS as a sick stray with bladder problems as a tiny kitten in 2016, it turned out he actually had a deformity in the region that was able to be corrected in the shelter’s Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital and with food that is specialized for urinary care.Once he was feeling better and back to being healthy, Winston found himself adopted rather quickly and living with other pets including dogs and cats but now finds himself back at AHS almost four years later. This is due to a few behavioral problems that arose after stress from a big move into another home but AHS’ Behavioral team has not seen while he has been back in the shelter.Described as a spunky kitty, this cute boy is most definitely a huge love bug that also has lots of energy and loves to play. His favorite place to chill out is a nice, quiet closet but do not expect him to be in there too long because Winston absolutely loves to snuggle with his humans at night and will never say no to playtime – especially chase! How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s adoption locations remain closed as the shelter continues to heal and rehabilitate pets coming in but its Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families. Interested adopters can view available pets, like Winston, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.— Kelsey Dickerson, Arizona Humane SocietyIver: A handsome cat Iver may not be bushy tailed, but he certainly is bright eyed.  This 6-year-old, handsome solid gray kitty is extremely friendly and outgoing and loves to carry on a conversation. He doesn’t dislike other cats, but because he becomes very jealous if they get attention. It is important that he be the only cat in the household. He was living in a home when one person developed dementia and keep letting him out. Fortunately, nothing bad happened but for his own good. He was returned so that he could find a new home where he would be kept safely indoors, away from the many bad things that could happen to him.Who will be the lucky person to welcome this new member into your household?  How to adopt: Iver is at Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue, 11129 Michigan Avenue, Youngtown. Call 623-876-8778 after 10 a.m. Adoptions are Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Also visit Surprise PetSmart, 13764 Bell Road, and Lake Pleasant Towne Center PetSmart, 25372 Lake Pleasant Parkway, Peoria, for other adoptable cats.— Beverly Bormann, Sun Cities 4 PawsKalani: An adorable bunny Kalani is just one of 277 rabbits rescued from a cruelty situation by the Arizona Humane Society and Gilbert Police in July when they were discovered in horrific conditions. Luckily for this beautiful 7-month-old shorthair rabbit, all Kalani needed in terms of medical care was treatment for ear mites and to spend some time in an AHS Foster Hero home to gain weight prior to receiving her spay surgery. AHS has also relied on the collaboration with many other rescue partners and organizations, including Brambley Hedge Rabbit Rescue, to help with the care and eventual adoption of many of the bunnies from this case, as well. A great example of how working together helps save the lives of so many pets throughout the Valley.Although many think of critters as being good “first-time” pets and “easy to care for,” it is important that people who are looking to adopt any animal do their research on the care that pet needs. For example, rabbits are very sensitive to extreme temperatures and cannot survive on their own outdoors like their wild cousins. Additionally, rabbits have very sensitive feet and need a flat surface on the bottom of their hutches and can also be litter box trained! How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s adoption locations remain closed as the shelter continues to heal and rehabilitate pets coming in but its Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families. Interested adopters can view available pets, like Kalani, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.— Kelsey Dickerson, Arizona Humane SocietyBuzz Pawldrin: A very happy puppy  Buzz Pawldrin is a 6-month-old Pit Bull-Hound mix, weighing in at about 30 pounds. He joined Friends for Life recently from Maricopa County Animal Control, where he was found as a stray.Buzz is living in a foster home with a few other dogs and doing great! It was determined that Buzz has a medical issue that we can’t fix, so he is looking for a home to rescue him. We learned that he had a grade 4/6 heart murmur. Buzz was treated at Arizona Veterinary Care and Critical Care Center, where they confirmed the heart murmur and also that there was no treatment for it. He was diagnosed with Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia, which is an uncommon congenital heart defec. Buzz is a very healthy and happy boy and thriving in his foster home. At this time there is no evidence of congestive heart failure. For now, no medication is recommended for him. He will need to go to the vet every 6 months to monitor his heart and to determine if it has enlarged further. This heart condition sounds scary, but this boy is super happy, playful and living a normal life in his foster home. Buzz needs someone to rescue him and give him a great life and make sure he sees a vet when needed. How to adopt: Buzz is neutered, licensed, vaccinated, and microchipped, and his adoption fee is $250. Friends for Life’s adoption center is located at 952 W. Melody Avenue in Gilbert, however, since Buzz is residing in a volunteer foster home anyone interested in meeting him can call Friends for Life at 480-497-8296 or e-mail Debbie@azfriends.org.Please visit Friends for Life’s web site at azfriends.org to learn about current COVID19 guidelines for the adoption center and fill out a consultation form for Buzz Pawldrin or another animal you might be interested in adopting.— Jannelle Cosgriff, Friends for LifeRead or Share this story: https://www.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/pets/2020/09/11/adopt-pet-winston-and-more-pets-up-adoption-phoenix-area-shelters-week/5749939002/
