The worst Nintendo Switch icons, according to fans
Nintendo Switch icons are a big deal: Not only do fans lobby for bad icon re-dos, makeovers get their own trailers. Sometimes, if you buy a game within a certain launch period, you might even get to temporarily enjoy a special limited-time icon. But not all Switch icons are made equal.
The folks over at Switch Icon Showdown have allowed fans to vote on what icons they like best over the last few years, and 2020 is no exception. According to the website proprietor, there have been nearly 40,000 votes this year alone, with 4,500 icons incorporated into the brackets. When you load the website up, it asks you to choose between the better of two icons. The more an icon wins, the better its overall standings.

The top icons for 2020 are indeed lookers, with La Mulana 2 taking the number one spot. According to the website, the blonde protagonist has won 78.74% of all battles so far. Other popular icons include Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Darksiders Genesis, Mega Man Zero/ZX Collection, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. Solid choices.
Winners, of course, also imply losers. And as of this writing, the worst-voted Nintendo Switch icon belongs to Where Angels Cry: Tears of the Fallen Collector’s Edition. It’s easy to see why; the hooded figure on the icon is generic and not particularly enticing. So far, the icon has only won a mere 8.27% of its battles.

Many of the names at the bottom of the list are smaller games that you may not have heard of, like Just Glide, AvoCuddle, and Horse Farm. While some of these inclusions are up for debate, other poorly designed icons do deserve their rankings. SEN: Seven Eight Nine, for example, is just a giant number 7 in a font that seems like Comic Sans. Stories Untold, which I’ve actually heard great things about, unfortunately shows up as a grainy red orb.
Hopefully, some of these games step it up — I know that some fans won’t buy a game if they think the icon will mess with their home page’s aesthetics. Unfair, maybe, but that’s how much folks care about Switch icons!
